It cannot be denied that Neptunia U is a great addition to the Hyperdimension franchise, while the action may become repetitive after playing in long bursts; it’s an enjoyable and rewarding game. The characters remain charming; the puns continue to be hilarious and best of all the world of Gamindustri is still an absolute joy to return to.

All in all, Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed does a really solid job of bringing colourful characters from the series into a new style of game. The wacky themes and continued commentary about gaming and fan service often brought a smile to my face.

Sorry Neptune, but with this shortage of content (though what is present is at least 'decent'), and outside of the map variety, there isn't much choice for a score. This isn't a PC game. It's a port of a portable title and it shows. Maybe some of the flaws, such as character variety, will be fixed later on through DLC, but… the water is warm and, while people may be more than willing to welcome Hyperdimension Neptunia into this new field, this seems more than willing to just sit on the edge and let its feet dangle into the pool than anything.

All in all, Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed was a decent distraction on handhelds, but a harder sell on PC when compared to the number of alternatives available, both from its own franchise and the Musou genre in general. Diehard fans will undoubtedly waste countless hours getting top ranks and unlocking all of the extras, which requires no skill at all but plenty of soul-crushing grinding to achieve.

Don't get me wrong—I'm honestly a big fan of the Hyperdimension Neptunia games, but Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed! is the dullest and buggiest thus far. Ironically, it's made me curious to see Tamsoft on their home turf: is the writing better in Senran Kagura, with characters the writers are more familiar with? Does the Dynasty Warriors-esque combat fit better in that universe? I don't know the answer, but their treatment of Action Unleashed! has resulted in less interesting combat, fewer gaming jokes, worse writing in general, and a technically sub-par product that can only be played in 20 to 40 minute chunks. Disclosures: This game was obtained via publisher and reviewed on a Windows PC with 8GB of RAM running Windows 10.

It’s safe to say that while Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed may not be the very best Neptunia has to offer, it was nonetheless an important entry in the series that acted as the jumping-off point for some of the franchise’s better installments in more recent years. And if nothing else, it deserves our respect for that!
