Nothing in Power Chord is a revelation. It executes familiar formulas, but it does so extremely well. Even now, considering post-release plans are already being discussed, there's a ton of content to make grinding out a victory worthwhile. You're going to lose, probably a lot, but it wouldn't be fun otherwise. It is enjoyable mastering the systems here. Building a deck that gels perfectly with your playstyle is satisfying. And, of course, sending these demons back to hell with the power of rock (and a little magic) serves as the ultimate reward in this tactical experience.

Much like playing an instrument, Power Chord is all about learning, adapting, and creating beautiful music to the beat of slaying demons.

All in all, I’m having a great time with Power Chord. I really like the playable characters, their designs, and how I have to account for multiple synergies. The presentation and attention to detail put it way above most other deck builders, and the dedication to heavy metal aesthetics encompassing every part of the game is truly commendable. With some balancing, especially with how it handles difficulty, I think Power Chord can become an even better title with hours of enjoyment and replayability. For now, I definitely think it is a great niche option for deckbuilding fans that love a challenge, and the strategy involved surely had me biting and coming around to look forward to trying more deck building games in the future.

It was a lovely experience all in all. If I spoke about the story of the game more than I already did I would just outright spoil it, but it’s a short and simple premise that just serves to provide you with a miniscule purpose as you slay demons. It’s as simple as Metal: Hellsinger, perhaps. Pros: - Fun and Addicting Gameplay. - Excellent turn-based pastime you can pause and continue later if you cannot commit enough time at once for a play session. - Metalheads love it. Cons: - Fun and Addicting Gameplay becomes monotonous, repetitive, and dull after a while if you stick with the game for a few weeks or so. - The soundtrack becomes repetitive (let’s face it… if you listen to any song enough times, it gets REALLY boring and you start hating it, similar to what happens to a song you put as your wake-up alarm). - The balance of the game is, in some rare cases, horrible.

Power Chord is a perfectly competent but entirely unexceptional roguelike deck builder. Once you take away the rock 'n' roll theme, it's pretty much another Slay the Spire clone that doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from the rest. It looks nice and plays well, but it doesn't stand out. If you've already burned through the other games in the genre and want something new, Power Chord will be the nice snack, but don't expect it to be a long-term engagement.

If you can get past its more grind-y elements, Power Chord can still be a fun deckbuilding roguelike game thanks to its impressive blend of influence that makes great use of its “Battle of the Bands” setup. It’s something for every headbanger to check out, as well as fans of the genre who don’t minds banging their heads against walls as they gradually chip down each tough demon in their path. Not exactly worthy of a Platinum record, but it can still be an enjoyable listen.
