CRITIK
the RetroRealms games let players traverse worlds and enter different realms to overcome challenges inspired by ‘Halloween’ and ‘Ash vs Evil Dead.’ Combining retro visuals with modern mechanics, players venture between two overlapping worlds, with the ability to enter the nightmare infested Dark Realm at any time, which unlocks shortcuts, hidden pathways, and rewards for those brave enough to enter.

RetroRealms takes two of the most beloved horror series and adapts them into enjoyable platformers with excellent pixel art. The difficulty can be a little bit mean at times, but both titles are a blast overall – especially for fans of each respective series. I can’t wait to see what other movies get the RetroRealms treatment, though I’ve got my fingers crossed for Alien.

RetroRealms is a real treat for fans of Evil Dead and Halloween, as these are fun to play through regularly and even more fun to mix and match the scenarios. Laurie Strode going up against Deadites? Why not! This is the type of horror fun that can only be achieved in gaming, and I’m fully for it. SCORE: 8.5/10 As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 8 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact. Disclosure: The publisher provided a digital PS5 copy for our RetroRealms review.

It’s tough to say whether Halloween is a lesser experience than Ash vs. Evil Dead since the two are so remarkably similar in style and structure; think of them as two DLC packs serving the larger ‘RetroRealms’ hub experience. Yet we can’t deny that controlling Michael Myers isn’t quite as exhilarating as Ash Williams, nor are the enemies quite as interesting. If forced to choose, we’d probably go with Ash vs. Evil Dead.
