Overview

In her DLC debut, Lara must brave the lava-flooded Forge of the fallen gods to uncover the secrets of Kuwaq Yaku. Throughout her journey, she will uncover details about a friend’s ancient legacy, and overcome a danger long thought to be lost in flame. The Forge delivers a brand-new challenge tomb, playable in both solo and co-op. Players who complete the challenge tomb will be rewarded with the Grenadier skill, Brocken outfit, and Umbrage 3-80 weapon. A completely new adventure, The Forge is the first of seven monthly DLC releases available through the Shadow of the Tomb Raider Season Pass, providing players with an abundance of fresh content, challenge tombs, co-op experiences, weapons and outfits, and additional narrative side missions. Additionally, The Forge will introduce Score Attack and Time Attack modes. Lara Croft has mastered an unforgiving jungle, explored vast ruin-filled landscapes, and battled Trinity for the fate of humanity, all set against the backdrop of the Maya apocalypse. Yet even more adventures await in the hidden City of Paititi. New mysteries and challenges will arise, friendships and rivalries will deepen, and above all, new tombs will be discovered in a series of DLCs that expand the world of Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The Forge is a great opening shot for the rest of six DLC adventures to follow, not to mention that it alone is better than the dreary 20th anniversary content released for Rise of the Tomb Raider. It’s a fun way to extend the game’s life beyond New Game+ and is tightly woven into the context of the main story, its people and their history without feeling unattached or forced. I hope that some of the future DLC tombs will find a reason to play alongside Yaaxil priestess Crimson Fire – or as her! That would be simply too awesome, for as agile and supple Lara is, Crimson Fire is a squirrel on steroids in a comparison as seen late in the main game when Lara tries to follow her lead.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider: The Forge is a solid addition to the experience providing a challenging tomb to tackle within the narrative or in a competitive mode. I liked how they split this up providing a new competitive area to experience while also building upon the story within the regular game. It has the full quality usual cinematics, an expansion on the characters and of course more raiding adventures to take part in.

If you already have the Season Pass, I would say The Forge is worth checking out. If you’re thinking of just shelling out five dollars for the game, I wouldn’t recommend it without getting the whole kit and caboodle: it’s just not enough content for what you get, although it is fun if you’re already a fan of the game. In that spirit, I’m giving it the same score that we gave the main game when it came out, because Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s The Forge isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. If, like me, you loved the gameplay and are willing to sit through a bit of sloppy writing to get to the fun within, it’s worth it. If you thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider wasn’t worth the entry ticket, I’d sit this one out. It’s all about perspective.

The DLC has a few hidden items such as monoliths and documents. Players will be given a new outfit, a new skill, and a new gun for completing the side mission. The DLC has its own set of trophies/achievements to earn. The Forge is also unlocked as a score and time attack challenge tomb on the main menu. Overall, The Forge DLC adds some interesting story for Abby's character and a fun new challenge tomb for a small fee.

I'm a little disappointed with this first pack of DLC given that it's so short, the tomb isn't very interesting, and the two new modes are quite similar. However, I love that co-op mode is introduced as it's definitely the most promising addition. Here's hoping for more interesting scenery and lengthier challenges in future DLC packs.

The Forge is a disappointingly brief and underwhelming add-on to an excellent game. What is there is technically good, but hard to recommend as content that Square Enix is asking you to pay for. I’d recommend holding off to see if the rest of the season pass is worthwhile or if you should pass on it entirely.
