The Story Goes On is one of the most interesting roguelikes that I've played in a while due to its incredibly clever secrets and satisfying gameplay. However, the easy difficulty and lack of presentational flair often make it feel a bit flat.

All-in-all The Story Goes On is a solid game. What it does, it does well. The visuals are pleasing and varying enough not to get boring. Boss fights require strategy and perma-death means that you take caution whilst battling through the dungeons. However, the puns and witty comments get tiresome and boring – not giving enough depth to the game to keep me wanting to read through them all the time.

The Story Goes On is a decent hack’n’slash experience that blends together some interesting ideas and ties them to a steady progression system. The boss encounters remain fun throughout, and there’s no shortage of secrets to uncover. However, the game is somewhat let down by bland visuals, overly repetitive gameplay, and a lack of enemy variety. This game was tested and reviewed on Xbox One.

For being a roguelike game, I enjoyed how The Story Goes On kept certain aspects of your progress, not being too harsh with its penalties. The core gameplay is decent, though not terribly exciting. It has some interesting ideas but definitely won’t wow you out of the gate. That being said, for $8.00 you could do a lot worse with games that offer a lot less. O
