Eternity: The Last Unicorn
A fully featured RPG with classic game mechanics and extensive lore based on Norse mythology. As all elven unicorns were taken away and cursed by witchcraft, the elves’ sole existence became endangered. Players will encounter mesmerizing locations and fantasy characters as Aurehen, a young pure Elf, who undertakes her quest to free the last surviving Unicorn that protects Elven immortality.

In a serious need of additional development, bug-fixes and testing, as well as ditching the misguided fixed camera, Eternity: The Last Unicorn plays like a medley of solid action-RPG mechanics and ideas without much depth or polish. The setting, characters and story are its saving grace but their charms are overshadowed by the game’s repetitive and sluggish combat and the annoying camera. Calling a game’s mechanics “classic” is no excuse for gameplay that is simply not very satisfying or fun.

Eternity: The Last Unicorn has a lot going against it. At times, it can remind you of the bad aspects of certain games from the early PS2 era. But that’s not to say it’s irredeemable. The interesting story, world exploration, and clear love of the Norse source material left me saying one thing. “You had so much more potential.” But if you temper your expectations, Eternity: The Last Unicorn can be a fun time. The game is available for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and Sony PlayStation 4. - THE GOOD - Fun world to explore. Deep lore inspired by Norse mythology.

So while a lot of the elements were there in order to create a stellar throwback RPG with nods to some rather great titles for their time, Eternity: The Last Unicorn missed that mark due to some of those design choices and the performance issues. With a bit more work and balancing though, as it’s never too late, Void Studios still have a chance to fix a good chunk of these issues and I would be more than glad to revisit this title once they do.

A game that might have had retro appeal, had it been a game released about 10 or 20 years ago. As a modern release it seems far too dated to compete with similar titles. 2.7 Outdated gaming I like a bit of retro gaming, playing titles from my early years of gaming had that warm nostalgic glow to it.

Eternity: The Last Unicorn is not a great game. It’s a game that takes from Norse mythology, but doesn’t really go deep enough to make you feel like you’re on a viking adventure. You can’t skip the cut scenes, the camera is the hardest boss in the game, and it just doesn’t live up to the games it emulates. I like you Eternity, I just wanted better.
